Why & how to make your own signature PURE-fume

What's in your perfume?

When you start looking…and I mean realllllly looking… at the ingredients in the things we put in and on our bodies on a regular basis, it’s shocking to see the amount of chemicals we are overloading our systems with!  Standard perfumes, body sprays, and lotions all contain "fragrance" (I’ll dive deeper into “fragrances” below!!) and other harmful chemicals. Harmful chemicals that we end up inhaling + lathering on our largest, most porous organ - our skin. Luckily, it’s so easy to ditch these toxic perfumes and create your own signature pure-fume using doTERRA essential oils.  I’m sharing exactly how to do this below and my 2 absolute favorite, go-to blends!!

But first, let’s talk “Fragrance”

When you read ingredient lists on products, you likely will come across the ingredient “Fragrance.”  Seems friendly enough - but what exactly is "Fragrance?"  Well, a deeper look will reveal that “Fragrance” is actually an umbrella term used in ingredient lists that often hide chemicals and toxic ingredients.  In fact, over 3,000 ingredients have been found to hide behind the term “fragrance.” To be fair, not all 3,000 of these ingredients are harmful - however, none of them are tested for safety because “Fragrance” is not regulated by the FDA.  Of those that have been tested, nearly 20% of them are considered Hazardous or Worse, according to the Environmental Working Group.

Where is "Fragrance" most commonly found?

-> Air Fresheners

-> Detergents

-> Dryer Sheets

-> Wall Plug-Ins

-> Fragrant Sprays

-> Perfumes

-> Unfortunately, almost anything with a scent

How do “Fragrances” affect us?

These chemical (synthetic) forms of scent are cheaper to make - BUT - many of the actual ingredients that hide behind the term "Fragrance" are linked to health complications such as:

-> Phthalates are potent hormone disruptors & linked to birth defects.

-> Phthalates are associated with causing damage to the male reproductive system, and these artificial smells can accumulate in our bodies and can even be found in breast milk.

-> Octoxynols and nonoxynols break down into persistent hormone disruptors, as well.

-> As much as 95% of these ingredients are derived from Petrochemicals that are known carcinogens and neurotoxins.

-> Others are linked to Asthma, Obesity/Weight loss Resistance, Metabolic Disorders, and Allergies, ADD/ADHD.

Because these chemicals are typically airborne, all of us breathing the contaminated air are ingesting them.

With these risks involved, why not Ditch these products? Especially knowing we have AMAZING alternatives to these products.

You can easily make roller bottles with oils as replacements for perfumes. But if you make a spray with alcohol instead I've found the scent lingers longer and it smells more like traditional perfumes.

How to Make Your Own Signature PURE-Fume

Items you will need:

Instructions:

Add your base, middle, and top note essential oils. Typically, you will use about 2 drops of the base, 3-4 of the middle note, and 4 of the top note in a 5 mL bottle. Top with alcohol.

My favorite Signature PURE-fume recipes are below:

Volcano

Black Pepper / Siberian Fir / Grapefruit / Tangerine

Golden

Vetiver / Neroli / Grapefruit

The scent combinations are endless but high-quality oils are necessary if you are wanting to avoid synthetic ingredients. Making a perfume is one of many ways you can use essential oils to replace synthetic fragrances.
